In an idiosyncratic twist, a tough housing market has brought back the need for Realtors.

Real estate agents say that homeowners who normally planned to sell their houses themselves have solicited the help of Realtors after being unable to sell their houses alone.

According to the National Association of Realtors 2010 Profile of Home Buyers & Sellers, for-sale-by-owner transactions decreased to 9 percent in 2010. Thats down from 14 percent in 2003 and 2004.

Its because there are too many properties on the market, said Raisa Galper, a Realtor with Prudential Gardner in New Orleans. There has been an increase. (Owners) say, I tried and it didnt work for me.

Galper said another reason some homeowners use Realtors more than before is that some people may need to sell their homes quickly before they go into foreclosure, and they cant afford to keep their homes on the market for very long.

Maybe its hard to (sell) homes via computer because (Realtors) dont have a list of properties that say, for sale by owner, she said. You just have to drive the neighborhood.
